Poplar

An early spring tour around “the most exciting square mile in London”, learning about Poplar HARCA and it’s Accents’ team broad-based approach to regeneration and placemaking.

The unique density of ownership, community management and mandate for area change allows an ambition to regenerate Poplar in an inclusive, sustainable way. Poplar HARCA’s £2.5bn physical regeneration is delivering new community, retail, work, faith and public space, alongside new homes and refurbishment programme.

This will contribute to the population doubling in the next 10 years. It is the Accents Team’s role to ensure that a genuinely mixed, sustainable, cohesive single community emerges.

A key discussion centred on public realm and agency, - the importance of local people  having a sense of ownership of both the physical public space and non-physical civic space. And so, the opportunity to own the change in the neighbourhood.
